Welcome to the official online home of Sandra Taylor — Canadian psychologist, author, and storyteller. Sandra’s memoir Tightrope offers a compelling and raw account of growing up amid mental illness and trauma, showing how balance, faith, and resilience can emerge from the most difficult experiences.
Sandra Taylor is a Canadian psychologist and writer living and working in Alberta, Canada. Her debut novel, Tightrope, is a memoir based on her personal experience growing up in a family rocked by mental illness and alcoholism. Before writing her first book, Sandra, known as Sam, to close friends and family, earned a B.Ed in elementary education from the University of Alberta, a M.Sc in Marriage and Family Therapy at Loma Linda University, graduating on the Dean’s list, and then continued to earn her registration as a clinical Psychologist in Alberta. Sandra has provided assessment and therapy for children and families for the past 30 years. Besides her current work in a tertiary pediatric centre, she finds time to write.
I am interested in stories about women who have survived difficult experiences to become strong, resilient, competent women. These stories pull at my heart and it is no wonder that given my own turbulent childhood, these stories are meaningful to me. When I’m relaxing, I enjoy hiking with my dog, Pepper, and taking wildlife photos.
A story set in the mid-1960’s of a family broken by mental illness and alcoholism. Sandra sits pressed in the corner of her bed while from the living room, she hears her father yell at her mother, “You’re off your goddamned nut again”. Her mother levels an accusation of cheating at her father and then-the thud as her mother hits the floor.
The beginning of Lynn and Jim’s marriage defines the tumultuous ending. When the couple head out on their honeymoon, Lynn annoys Jim by snapping her gum, he wraps it around her nose, and she jumps out of the moving car. Lynn’s belief that she is clairvoyant adds to Jim’s mistrust and his reactivity.
The family moves to a small northern town after Jim gets into a fight in Galahad with law enforcement. Sandra is exposed to religion and the pitfalls of drinking and fornicating while staying with the Harris family. She decides to save her father by pouring the bottle of whiskey down the sink-but he comes into the kitchen while the deed is underway.
